The stretch between SE 20th and SE 50th has exploded into one of the city’s top dining destinations, with block after block of restaurants ranging from casual noodle spots to inventive farm-to-table bistros. Clinton Street, running parallel, adds even more options for brunch and coffee. If you’re only exploring one neighborhood for food, this is the place to go.

Hawthorne Boulevard (SE Portland)
This iconic SE Portland corridor is home to legendary spots like Por Qué No? Taqueria, Apizza Scholls — frequently ranked among the best pizzerias in the country — and Basilisk, famous for its towering fried chicken sandwich. For dessert, Blue Star Donuts and Fifty Licks are both worth stopping at.
The Cartopia Food Cart Pod, operating since 2008, offers even more variety. Hawthorne is also incredibly walkable and full of local shops, making it a great neighborhood to spend an entire afternoon.

Alberta Arts District (NE Portland)
The Alberta Arts District in Northeast Portland is a bustling, highly walkable neighborhood. You’ll find Pine State Biscuits serving legendary southern-style gravy biscuits, Salt & Straw offering handmade seasonal ice cream and a wide range of globally inspired restaurants that lean heavily on locally sourced, sustainable ingredients.
On the last Thursday of every month, the famous Last Thursday street fair brings food trucks, pop-ups, and local vendors to Alberta Street. This is a fun evening out any time of year.

Mt. Tabor & the East Side of Portland
Out near Mt. Tabor in SE Portland, you’ll find some of the city’s most beloved neighborhood restaurants. Coquine is a standout example: a warm, French-inspired bistro steps from Mt. Tabor Park, open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with consistently excellent food and a cozy, unpretentious atmosphere.
The East Side of Portland in general, along Belmont Street, 28th Avenue, and Burnside, is packed with independent restaurants, brewpubs, and wine bars that make this part of the city an important stop in the exploration of all food Portland has to offer. This area happens to also be highly walkable!
