A Small Town 15 Minutes East Of Portland

Just a short drive east of Portland, where the Sandy and Columbia Rivers meet, sits Troutdale — a small city known for its historic downtown, its antique shops, and its role as the official starting point for one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Troutdales History

Troutdale’s story starts with Captain John Harlow, a sea captain and Portland businessman who chose a scenic bluff above the Sandy and Columbia rivers for his farm in 1872. He’s the one who renamed the area — originally known as Sandy, after the river — to Troutdale, after stocking a pond on his property with trout. Troutdale officially incorporated as a city in 1907, and in 1913, locals elected Clara Latourell Larsson as their first female mayor, years before women had the right to vote nationwide.

In 1916, Troutdale became the western starting point of the Historic Columbia River Highway, the first scenic highway built in the United States. That highway is still the reason so many people pass through Troutdale today, on their way to waterfalls, cliffs, and 70-plus miles of Gorge scenery. The city has leaned into that role as a gateway, restoring its historic 1907 railroad depot into a visitor center and preserving landmarks like the Harlow House and the old Troutdale water tower.

Antiques, Outdoor Gear, and River Mud

Being a gateway town means Troutdale homes deal with a mix that’s pretty specific to the area — a lot of outdoor recreation traffic combined with a lot of older, well-loved furnishings:

  • Trail mud and river sand tracked in from Gorge hikes, Sandy River outings, or a day at Glenn Otto Community Park
  • Antique and vintage furniture that needs more careful, non-abrasive cleaning than modern furniture pieces
  • Guest and visitor traffic, since Troutdale sees a steady flow of out-of-town guests passing through on Gorge road trips
  • Historic home upkeep, with a number of homes and buildings dating back to the early 1900s that call for gentler cleaning products to protect original materials

Whether you’re heading out for a day at Multnomah Falls or just enjoying a quieter, small-town pace outside the city, Troutdale has held onto its identity as both a historic river town and the literal doorway to some of Oregon’s best scenery — mud, antiques, and all.
